Police and ZAD activists engaged in fierce clashes at a protest camp near Notre-Dame-des-Landes near Nantes on Tuesday. The activists were driven back by a tear gas as they attempted to remain on the site. They erected barricades which police tried to destroy with an armoured vehicle. Activists threw smoke bombs and Molotov cocktails in response. The eco-activists of ZAD (Zone a Defendre/Zone... Еще to Defend) initially came together in 2008 to protest against a proposed airport in Nantes. The plan was recently abandoned, however it is estimated that up to 200 activists remain at the site and refuse to leave it, despite evacuation orders and forced eviction threats by authorities.
