Police officers staged a rally in Paris on Friday night, in protest of the government’s alleged lack of support, and to stand united amid growing criticism of police tactics. Tensions arose as counter-protesters, some from the Yellow Vest movement, confronted police officers.
Police vehicles with blue lights and sirens on filled the Trocadero esplanade, as officers dumped their handcuffs to the ground in protest. They also sang the national anthem.
Tensions arose when counter-protesters confronted the police. In one instance, a police officer was seen pushing a Yellow Vest protester.
«As long as they maintain this line without questioning themselves, I will not support them. Because I saw too much horror for a year and a half, I saw women, unarmed civilians on whom we used weapons of war like grenades, they were stunned, mutilated. This is why I can no longer see them and I will not support them. Let them apologize to this population there,» said a counter-protester.
On Monday, Interior Minister Christophe Castaner announced that chokeholds would be banned and no longer be taught in police training in a bid to improve ethics in the police forces, following a wave of protests against racism and police brutality around the world sparked by the death of George Floyd in the US.
