France: Tear gas flies as Bastille Day demo turns violent in Paris

Clashes erupted on the streets of Paris on Bastille Day on Tuesday, as demonstrators answered a call made by the CGT (General Confederation of Labour) to protest job cuts but also poverty and unemployment. Police officers could be seen clashing with the demonstrators and deploying tear gas to disperse the crowd. Bastille Day is a French national day celebrated each year on July 14. It marks the storming of the Bastille prison in 1789, a turning point in the French Revolution. The French government is still banning public gatherings with more than 5,000 people due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
