European Parliament president David Sassoli urged the Spanish authorities to comply with an EU Court of Justice ruling issued on Thursday, which stated that a Catalan separatist leader jailed last October by Spain was entitled to immunity as a member of the EU Parliament. The remarks came as Sassoli was speaking at a plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, on Thursday.
«I call... Еще upon the competent Spanish authorities to urge them to comply with the ruling. I have given a mandate to the services of the Parliament to evaluate, in the shortest time possible, the possible application of the impacts of this ruling on the composition of our parliament», Sassoli stated.
Oriol Junqueras was given a 13-year sentence in October 2019 over the 2017 failed Catalan independence referendum, which was deemed as illegal by Spanish courts. He was elected to the EU parliament in May while on pre-trial detention and was prevented from taking office.
