France: Police deploy tear gas as thousands decry eviction of ZAD squatters

Police used tear gas during a protest in Nantes on Monday, where thousands of people had gathered to voice their anger against the eviction of ZAD squatters. People marched through the streets brandishing pink smoke canisters and waving flags. There was a high police presence at the protest with a helicopter monitoring the event. Earlier in the day, squatters who had been protesting on a... Еще rooftop were taken away by the police. Their demonstration had followed an outburst of clashes over the eviction of the alternative 'Zone a Defendre' (Z.A.D./Zone to Defend) near Notre-Dame-Des-Landes. The evacuation came one day after Prime Minister Edouard Philippe confirmed an eviction will take place in the coming days. The group originally established the community to protest the building of an airport in the area. While the plans for this airport were abandoned in February 2018, many members of the community still seek to remain and continue their communal living project.
