France: «Little Pompeii» Roman ruins unearthed near Lyon

Archaeologists uncovered what they have described as a «little Pompei», on the edge of the southeastern city of Vienne, near Lyon, on Thursday. The discovery proved to be the remains of a Roman neighbourhood. Archaeologists who stumbled across the find have compared it to Italy’s decimated city of Pompeii, as both sites reveal communities that were suddenly abandoned. An archaeologist... Еще working on the site explained how the excavation shows artefacts in their original position because “all the population had to run away from a fire, and leave everything in place.” The site covers an area of nearly 7,000 square metres (75,000 sq ft) and was thought to have been inhabited for 300 years, until a series of fires forced its residents to flee.
