Cars and rubbish bins were set alight in the Garges-les-Gonesse area, around 15 kms (9 miles) from the centre of Paris, on Thursday night. The incidents occurred amid riots in the area over the police killing of a 22-year-old man in the city of Nantes. According to police, officers opened fire on Fofana after he reversed his car into a police officer. A bullet hit the driver in his carotid artery which led to his death. However a widely reported witness statement contradicts the police account, saying the car was stationary at the time of the incident. A police officer has been taken into custody for questioning in relation to Fofana's death. Nantes Mayor Johanna Rolland has reportedly asked for a transparent investigation into the case.
