France: Colombian Pres. hails progress with FARC, OECD and NATO

Outgoing Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos addressed the European Parliament (EP) in Strasbourg on Wednesday, commenting on the progress of ongoing peace process in Colombia, its admission into international organisations and the presidential elections. On the recent presidential elections, which produced no clear victor, Santos said: «They were the safest, most transparent elections, with... Еще the best guarantees, with the most observers and — most importantly — with the greatest participation in our history. Even my most bitter opponents say so.» He pointed also pointed to the ongoing peace process in Colombia, noting: «The achievement of the disarmament of the FARC and its constitution as a political party has changed the country in a fundamental way and whoever is my successor should know that this advance is definitive and irreversible.» Santos, who is due to step down from his position in August, announced last Friday that Colombia has joined the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) as well as becoming the first Latin American country to join NATO as a global partner.
