Charities operating the Aquarius migrant rescue ship in the Mediterranean condemned the Panama Maritime Authority's (PMA) decision to deflag the vessel as «unprecedented» and «extremely political» at a press conference in Paris on Tuesday. SOS Mediterranee and Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) claimed that Panama revoked the vessel's registration due to alleged economic and political pressure from... Еще the Italian government. The two charities called on the PMA to reconsider its decision and urged European governments to grant the vessel a new flag to sail under in order carry on with its rescue mission. Head of SOS Mediterranee Francis Vallat noted that «Italy's pressure is stated very clearly by Panama, including threats about European ports, where for example all Italian ports would be closed to vessels sailing under the Panamanian flag.» The Aquarius is the last private rescue ship operating off the Libyan coast. Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini denied allegations that Italy influenced Panama's decision to revoke the Aquarius's registration.
