France: CDU-CSU migration deal legal — Juncker

A deal struck on migration between Germany's centre-right governing coalition between the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Bavarian allies the Christian Social Union (CSU) is legal under European Union (EU) law, believed European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker in Strasbourg on Tuesday. «I have not studied it in detail but at first glance, and I have asked the legal services to look... Еще at it, it seems to me to be in line with the law,» Juncker clarified, when speaking at a joint press conference alongside President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani and Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz. Austria has taken over the rotating presidency of the EU Council from Bulgaria. During the press event Antonio Tajani thanked the Austrian leader for prioritising migration and expressed his will to strengthen the EU's borders. «Obviously, if there is a failure to protect our external border, then that would lead to the reintroduction of the internal borders. And that's something that we all want to avoid,» Tajani said. For his part, Kurz promised to fight against illegal migration and to do his best to secure common European borders. Referring to the migration deal which appears to have ended a dispute between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and her Interior Minister Horst Seehofer, he noted that «if Germany implements measures at the national level, then Austria and probably other countries will have to react to that.»
