Scores of adoring people watched thousands of sheep parading through the street of Madrid on Sunday, as the annual ancient grazing festival of Transhumance took place.
Their route from Cuesta de la Vega to Alfonso XII, traces a 700-year-old migration route through the Spanish capital's centre, where open fields and woodland once stood. The shepherds paid a symbolic amount of a hundred... Еще 'maravedis,' an 11th century currency, to city hall officials to be allowed to cross the Royal Gorge. Madrid Mayor Manuela Carmena greeted the sheep as city hall as per tradition.
Since 1994, shepherds have annually celebrated this «Festival of Transhumance,» which is organised to celebrate ancient grazing traditions in Spanish agriculture, currently under threat by modern practices.
