Thousands of Egyptians rallied against US President Donald Trump's decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, in Cairo on Friday. Protesters gathered at Cairo's Al-Azhar mosque after Friday prayers, before making their way through the capital's old neighbourhoods. They chanted slogans decrying Israel and the US as they marched and waved Palestinian flags and raised banners... Еще denouncing Trump's decision. According to local reports, five people affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood were arrested earlier the day on suspicion of planning to carry out violent acts. Egypt's interior ministry warned in a statement that the banned group was «exploiting the situation to destabilize the country». Trump recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel on Wednesday in a live televised address from Washington DC. He also began the process of moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv. The decision caused an immediate outrage and fury from countries in the Islamic world. The status of the Holy City is a contentious issue in the Middle East peace process. Israel has always claimed Jerusalem as its capital while Palestinians demand that annexed East Jerusalem becomes the capital of a future Palestinian state.
