Egypt: Arab League urges Palestine recognition in wake of Jerusalem move

Secretary General of the League of Arab States Ahmed Aboul-Gheit urged countries to recognise a Palestinian State 'as soon as possible', after US President Donald Trump's Jerusalem decision in Cairo on Saturday. He went on to say that the recognition of Palestine is now the matter of high importance, not only for Palestine itself but also for ‘the international community, which has been violated... Еще by the American decision.’ Jordanian Foreign Affairs Minister Ayman El Safdy also condemned Trump's decision in his speech, saying, ‘it is legally inapplicable and it is nonentity, this decision is void and invalid.’ Foreign minister from 22 Arab States gathered at an emergency meeting in Egyptian capital after Trump significantly shifted US foreign policy by formally recognising Jerusalem as the capital of Israel for the first time. The decision sparked immediate outrage and fury from the Arab world. The status of the Holy City is a key issue in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
