Ecuador: Tear gas fired as anti-austerity protest paralyses Quito

People were seen facing off with riot police with tear gas being fired as demonstrators took to the streets of Quito on Monday, in a fifth day of protests against the elimination of fuel subsidies announced by the Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno. The protest paralysed parts of the Ecuadorian capital. According to media reports, the number of detained protesters has raised to 477 since October... The elimination of fuel subsidies is designed to ease Ecuador's debt burden, with the country forced to impose public spending cuts as part of a loan deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
