The Ecuadorian constitutional court delayed a final ruling on whether to extend marriage right to same-sex couples in Quito on Monday.
Efrain Soria and his partner Javier Benalcazar had tried to apply for a marriage license last May. After the Civil Registry rejected their application, the couple decided to appeal in the courts.
At present, the Ecuadorian constitution defines marriage as between... Еще a man and a women, but it contains an amendment allowing gays and lesbians to enter into civil unions.
The case rests on a landmark ruling by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights in 2018 which recognised same-sex marriage.
This is the ruling's first test in court and it could set an important precedent for a traditionally conservative Ecuador and its neighbours in Latin America.
