Former King of Spain Juan Carlos I is rumoured to have fled to the Dominican Republic after he left Spain amid a corruption scandal. Spanish press outlets reported on Tuesday that he would be temporarily staying at the luxury touristic resort of Casa de Campo, in La Romana.
“It is something very nice that a personality like him has chosen this place to live or at least visit,” commented a local resident, Amaurys Perez, on Tuesday.
“He is running, so we do not want him here. Go and solve what he has to solve and then come to Romana to vacation,» said another local, Luis Castillo.
Juan Carlos announced his plans to leave in a letter to his son, Felipe, on Monday, saying that his decision was made «in the face of the public repercussions that certain past events in my private life are generating.»
The former King has been under investigation by Spain's Supreme Court since June for his alleged involvement in a high-speed rail contract in Saudi Arabia. In his letter, he said he would be available if prosecutors needed to interview him.
