Citizens of the eastern DRC city of Goma reacted to the official presidential election result after it was announced on Thursday.
According to the country's electoral commission, opposition candidate Felix Tshisekedi won the presidential election with 38 percent of the vote, four percentage points ahead of second-placed Martin Fayulu.
The preferred successor of outgoing President Joseph... Еще Kabila, Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary, placed only third.
Simphora Biduaya, national candidate of UDPS, expressed delight at the outcome, saying, «our joy is that, as you know we had this fight for 37 years. Today it is the people who win.»
«We are happy because the Congolese people understand that change is needed. For change to occur today, as it was always said, it had to happen through the UDPS,» she added.
Despite the result's announcement, its validity has been called into question by a number of organisations and officials. Martin Fayulu himself has termed the outcome an «electoral coup.» The Catholic church meanwhile said the result did not correspond to polling data its members had collected.
According to reported pre-election polling, Fayulu was well ahead of Tshisekedi in the race for the presidency.
