Czech Republic: $2 mln worth of rhino horns turned to ashes in protest to poaching plight

The Dvur Kralove Zoo in Dvur Kralove nad Labem set fire to about 33 kgs (74 lbs) of rhino horns, Tuesday, in a bid to fight the thriving and illegal trade of rhino horns. Celebrated conservationists Paula Kahumbu and Richard Leakey, among other activists, were present at the rhino horn bonfire, where the heap worth at least EUR 1.6 mln (USD 2 mln) was turned to ashes . «We can almost... Еще believe that rhinos will always be there,» Kahumbu said, before adding that «at the rate they are being poached across Africa for their horns to supply the rhino horn trade in Asia we could lose Africa's rhinos within 15-20 years.» Chief of international projects at the Dvur Kralove Zoo Jan Stejskal appealed to «people in South Africa where they lifted the domestic ban to reconsider their decision.» Last March, the Dvur Kralove Zoo, home to the largest group of rhinos in Europe, announced it would have the horns of its rhinos sewn off, in an attempt to deter poachers.
