Cuba: 60th anniversary of revolution celebrated on New Years' Day

Cuba celebrated 60 years of revolution in Santiago de Cuba on New Year's Day. Speaking at a ceremony in the Santa Ifigenia Cemetery, Raul Castro, First Secretary of Cuba's Communist Party (PCC), said the revolution gave Cubans «a free, independent and sovereign country» and «prosperous times» await it in the future. Castro then reiterated Havana's «willingness to coexist in a civilized way... Еще, in a relation of peace, respect and mutual benefits with the United States» despite aggression from Washington. On this day in 1959 and after three years of guerrilla war, the rebels led by Fidel Castro took over the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba thereby forcing dictator Fulgencio Batista into permanent exile.
