Cooling down, heating up: Austrian brewery transforms heat waste to warm hundreds of flats

A brewery, located in the suburb of Vienna in Schwechat is now producing heating for houses from the waste heat produced during the brewing process, as seen on Monday. In partnership with the energy company «EVN» the beer factory Schwechat has found an innovative use for its heat waste sending it through pipes to generate heating and hot water for as many as 900 flats. Master brewer Andreas Urban said their beer serves two purposes, «On the one hand a consumer can cool down with our delicious beer. On the other hand, through the use of brewing heat, apartments can be kept warm and hot water is produced.» «People living in the apartments do not notice if the heating is done with beer, or with hot water. Nothing changes for them. It's just a normal heating system including hot water, which works like every other heating system,» explained the project leader Peter Friedl.
