FIFA President Gianni Infantino confirmed that video assistant referees (VAR) had been approved by FIFA's ruling council for use at the upcoming 2018 Russia World Cup, during a press conference in Bogota on Friday. «We are going to have the first World Cup in 2018 with VAR. This has been approved, decided and we are of course very happy with that decision,» said Infantino. The FIFA president... Еще went on to stress that VAR technology dramatically improves the accuracy of the game; «Without VAR a referee makes one important error, a serious error, each three matches. With VAR the referee makes one important error each 19 matches.» VAR has been trialled in various competitions including Germany's Bundesliga, and was first used at the Club World Cup in December 2016. The technology allows off-pitch referees to re-examine and possibly overturn an initial decision made by the referee.
