Colombia: 'Referee was very bad' — Sad Colombian fans regret World Cup loss

SOT, Colombian football fan 2 (Spanish): «Apart from the refereeing, we could have won.» A big crowd of Colombian football fans watched their team lose against England and be thrown out the 2018 World Cup in Bogota on Tuesday. Fans dressed in yellow and waving Colombian flags cheered their team excitedly during the whole game. Spectators turned silent as the game went to penalties, and... Еще England's victory gave Colombians a sad return home. «[We are] sad because we wanted to pass. It was a very compact and good team, we thought we could get further. Unfortunately, the game turned around. The referee decisions were unbalanced, we had a goal annulled and there was no reason for that, the penalty was doubtful, and the refereeing was partial. The rest, well, the team played incredibly, and we lost a bit the hope, but there is nothing to do», said one Colombian fan. England took a lead over Colombia in the 57th minute when Harry Kane was allegedly dragged down in the penalty area and the referee pointed to the spot. The golden boot-contender stepped up and struck the ball down the middle, past a flailing David Ospina. The awarding of the penalty was marred by both sets of players crowding the referee. During what was at times a bad-tempered and scruffy affair, referee Mark Geiger booked eight players, six of them Colombians. England's luck ended when Yerry Mina scored from Colombia's first corner in injury time. Kieran Trippier's goaline clearance merely helped the ball on its way, via the crossbar. Colombia had a renewed sense of purpose, with England struggling for a response as the game went into extra-time. However, the scores remained 1:1 at the end of the 30 minutes and the game went to penalties. Despite Jordan Henderson's penalty being saved by Ospina, it was a miss by Mateus Uribe and a save from England keeper Jordan Pickford which sparked wild celebrations from the rest of the team and tears from Colombian supporters. England will now face Sweden in Samara on Saturday for a place in the World Cup Semi-Finals.
