Colombia: Protesters rally in Bogota against activist killings

Hundreds of people rallied on Bogota's Bolivar Square on Friday, to denounce the killing of more than 300 social leaders and human rights activists since 2016, the year when the government signed a landmark peace deal with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). According to a statement this week by Colombian Ombudsman Carlos Alfonso Negret, at least 311 social leaders and human... Еще rights advocates were murdered between January 1, 2016 and June 30, 2018. Some 100 social and community leaders were reportedly killed since the beginning of 2018, and at least 19 activists lost their lives in the last month alone, including social leader and campaigner for leftist presidential candidate Gustavo Petro, Ana Maria Cortes, who was murdered in Caceres this week. The opposition has blamed paramilitary groups for the killings, who they claim are fighting for territorial control of the regions vacated by FARC fighters following the peace accord.
