Colombia: FARC kicks off first congress following peace accord

The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) kicked off the first congress since the conclusion of the disarmament process following the historic peace accord with the Colombian government, in Bogota, Sunday. The aim of the congress is to choose a new name for the recently demobilised group and transform it into a political party. FARC leader Rodrigo Lodrono 'Timochenko' Echeverri said... Еще, «We will continue to fight in order to establish a democratic political regime that guarantees peace through social justice, respect for human rights and economic development with welfare for all of us living in Colombia.» He went on to note that the group «decided to get ready for the transition of our political-military structure into a new political party.» The week-long congress is scheduled to conclude on September 1, with a rally on Bogota's Bolivar Square. The Colombian government and FARC agreed a peace deal on November 12 in which the rebel group agreed to give up arms and transform itself into a legally recognised political party. The UN has received 7,132 weapons from the rebels.
