Children born in Colombia to Venezuelan parents will now be able to receive Colombian citizenship in a bid by the government to prevent them from facing statelessness, Colombian President Ivan Duque announced in Bogota on Monday.
The president alleged that many such children did not enjoy the right to a nationality because of interference from the Venezuelan government and the closure of... Еще consulates in Colombia.
He said the Colombian government wanted to “tell those 24 thousand children who had been in that situation that practically led to statelessness, that they will not be in that situation and that today they are given Colombian nationality.»
Unlike other countries in the region, Colombia usually only confers nationality on children who have at least one parent with legal residence. The new measures will apply to some 24,000 children who were born in 2015 or later, as well as for any children born to Venezuelan parents in Colombia over the next two years.
Over 1.2 million Venezuelans have fled to Colombia since 2015.
