China: Xi's Macao visit marks 20th anniversary of Beijing rule

Chinese President Xi Jinping visited a government services center and a school in Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) on Thursday, as part of his three-day visit to mark the 20th anniversary of Macao's handover from Portugal to China. The Chinese leader, who earlier on Wednesday held a meeting with Macao's outgoing Chief Executive Chui Sai, praised the city's government for implementing the 'one country, two systems' principle under which the country has been administered in the past twenty years. Macao was a colony of Portugal since the European country acquired it as a trading post in 1557, and was handed back to China on December 20, 1999, 442 years later.
