China: Public access to US consulate in Chengdu blocked as Chinese authorities order its closure

Roads and pavements leading to the US Consulate in Chengdu appeared to be blocked after Chinese authorities have officially ordered its closure on Friday, blaming the US for crumbling bilateral ties following the closure of Houston's Chinese consulate. Chinese security forces were seen on guard in the area around the road leading to the consulate. On Tuesday, Washington gave China 72 hours to cease all operations of its consulate in Houston to «protect American intellectual property and the private information of its citizens.» In a statement revoking the Chengdu consulate's permission to operate released on Friday, the Chinese Foreign Ministry blamed the closure on the US's move against the Houston consulate, which it said «seriously violated international law and the basic norms of international relations.»
