China: Jinping outlines 'new era' vision of globalisation and openness at key meeting

Over an almost three hour long speech, Xi reinforced several times that this was the time for the nation to rejuvenate and transform, claiming that “by mid-21st Century, China will stand firm among the most powerful nations in the world, with a stronger spirit than ever.» During his speech, Xi also mentioned that China was committed to opening its economy “wider and wider”, and condemned economic isolation. «No country can afford to retreat into self-isolation, a path that only leads to backwardness,” said the Chinese President. The congress meeting, China’s biggest political event, is held once every five years to map the country’s future. Some 2,287 delegates from across the country gathered in the capital’s Great Hall of the People amid tight security for the closed door congress.
