Dalian continued to carry out coronavirus tests on their entire population of about six million people on Wednesday, as the northeastern port city reported 44 new cases that could be linked to a surge in cases in other cities, reports say.
Residents of the city were seen queuing for testing at sample collection points in front Jinxiu Primary School, where medical workers were conducting the tests while wearing protective suits. Testing is reported to have begun on Sunday.
According to local media, the new COVID-19 infection chain has spanned five provinces and cities including Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang, Fujian and Beijing, where new cases were traced back to Dalian.
As of Wednesday, China has reported 87,108 COVID-19 cases, with 4,658 related deaths, according to figures compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
