Chile: Santiago streets fall silent amid coronavirus lockdown

The streets and roads of Chile’s buzzing metropolis Santiago were seen nearly deserted on Saturday, following the government’s decision to enforce a strict lockdown in the capital and its surroundings to curb the soaring cases of the coronavirus. Chile’s Health Minister announced on Wednesday the implementation of a strict lockdown in Santiago and surrounding towns starting on Friday evening following a spike in COVID-19 cases. Chile has recorded over 41,400 confirmed cases of coronavirus since the outbreak began and more than 420 fatalities related to the virus thus far, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
