Chile: Protesters clash with police in anti-govt rally in Valparaiso

Demonstrators clashed with police in latest anti-government rally in Valparaiso on Monday. Groups of protesters, gathered near the National Congress, could be seen throwing stones at riot police vehicle, who responded with water cannons. The peaceful demonstration escalated when protesters set fire to barricades and burned an effigy of President Sebastian Pinera, which they had also tied to gallows. This latest round of protest comes a day after two ancient churches were looted and partially burned as demonstrators marked the anniversary of the start of social unrest in Chile on Sunday. On October 25, Chile will hold a crucial national referendum on the amendment of the constitution, which will decide if it will be replaced. The current constitution was inherited from the dictator era under Augusto Pinochet.
