Security forces used water cannon and tear gas to disperse dozens of protesters on Monday during unrest at a demonstration in the commune of El Bosque, an impoverished neighbourhood of Santiago.
During the protest, the residents of the commune in the Chilean capital shouted slogans against the police and the government to denounce a lack of work and food, amid the COVID-quarantine in the city... Riot police charged at the protesters, who are seeking help from the authorities, and at least eight people were detained during the demonstration.
The mayor of El Bosque, Sadi Melo, has asked Sebastian Pinera’s government to pay attention to the social emergency in the commune.
Santiago was put under strict lockdown on Friday following a surge in cases of the novel coronavirus.
