The Lima Group and Canada rejected the decision taken by the Venezuelan government to call for early presidential elections at a conference in Santiago on Tuesday.
The Venezuelan government proposed elections in the first four months of 2018, which has been condemned by the group consisting of more than a dozen Latin American countries.
The Chilean Minister of Foreign Affairs, Heraldo Munoz... Еще, explained the decision, saying it «makes it impossible to hold transparent and credible democratic presidential elections in accordance with international standards and contradicts the democratic principles and good faith for the dialogue between the government and the opposition».
«The decision by the government of Venezuela to have elections in the first four months of this year will not meet this objective in our view,» stated Canadian Associate Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, David Morrison, whose country has taken a leading role in the attempt to address the Venezuelan issue.
A group of Venezuelan protesters staged a rally in front of the venue with the placards and banners, raising concerns about the future of their crisis-hit homeland.
