Clashes erupted between police and protesters in Santiago on Sunday, following a protest commemorating the 45th anniversary of the violent coup d'etat of Augusto Pinochet on September 11, 1973. Police used water cannons and tear gas against protesters who responded by hurling rocks at them. Protesters with banners and flags marched against fascism in commemoration of the bloody anniversary... Еще. Augusto Pinochet's era left a death toll of around 3,000 murdered, some 1,200 missing and 33,000 tortured, according to the official figures, though human right organisations believe the toll is much higher. Pinochet imposed a military junta after ousting socialist president Salvador Allende, who later committed suicide. Pinochet stayed in power until 1990 after a referendum voted for a transition back to democracy.
