Violent clashes erupted between thousands of anti-government protesters and riot police for the 8th day on the streets of Santiago on Friday.
Protesters waving Chilean flags and chanting slogans blocked the streets of the capital and clashed with riot police who used water cannons and tear gas, in an attempt to disperse them. Multiple fires were lit on the streets, with some not only throwing... Еще stones but also petrol bombs at police.
The current wave of demonstrations, which is considered to be the worst in decades, was sparked by a now-suspended metro fare hike. The demonstrations have since evolved into a movement with wider grievances aimed at addressing the rising cost of living, pension reform and police conduct during demonstrations as well as demanding the resignation of President Sebastian Pinera.
