Chile: Bee in your bonnet? Beekeepers rally for species' survival

Beekeepers marched through the streets of Valparaiso to Chile's National Congress on Monday, demanding measures to protect bees from the chemicals used in agriculture. The current legislation regarding agrochemicals was passed 50 years ago and beekeepers claim it threatens their colonies, while new legislation has not received backing or input from the beekeeping community. «It is a project... Еще with an overly punishing approach, a restrictive approach, and we want a promotional approach, an approach that allows for the sustainability and development of our field,» said Misael Cuevas, President of the National Beekeeping Network. Bees are vital in maintaining the ecosystem as well as in producing wax and honey, but their numbers are threatened by pesticides which are commonly used in farming.
