Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that assault-style weapons are now banned in Canada, during a press briefing held in Ottawa, on Friday. Trudeau's ban came after one of the worst mass shootings in Canadian history, which claimed 22 lives in Nova Scotia in April.
«Today we are closing the market for military-grade assault weapons in Canada,» said Trudeau, adding that these weapons... Еще only serve the purpose to «kill the largest number of people in the shortest amount of time.»
«There is no use and no place for such weapons in Canada.»
«Effective immediately, it is no longer permitted to buy, sell, transport, import or use military-grade assault weapons in this country. To protect law-abiding gun owners from criminal liability until they can take steps to comply with this new law, there will be a two-year amnesty period and we will legislate fair compensation,» he specified.
On April 18 and 19, in Portapique, a gunman wearing a police uniform and driving a «look-alike» police vehicle started a 12-hour rampage through small rural communities before being shot dead by the RCMP in a standoff.
