Cambodia: Phnom Penh celebrates 40th years since fall of Khmer Rouge

Tens of thousands of Cambodians attended celebrations commemorating the 40th anniversary of the fall of the Khmer Rouge and its leader Pol Pot, at Phnom Penh's Olympic Stadium, Monday. Performers stood in formation to form images of the country's flag and Prime Minister Hun Sen gave a speech alongside other senior government officials. The Khmer Rouge ruled Cambodia from 1975 to 1979, when... Еще the regime was removed from power by Vietnamese troops, during which time it was responsible for the deaths of over 1.5 million people or around 25 percent of the population. Hun Sen was a commander in the Khmer Rouge before defecting and fleeing to Vietnam in 1977, from where he participated in its subsequent overthrowing.
