Bulgaria: Protesters block road over government's handling of Roma community

Hundreds of protesters blocked a road connecting the towns of Asenovgrad and Smolyan in southern Bulgaria for an hour in a repeat of demonstrations over apparent 'Roma aggression', Sunday. The protest moved through the streets of Asenovgrad demanding the eviction of the local Roma community who were allegedly involved in a fracas with a kayaking club towards the end of June. Tension between... Еще the club and the local Roma community broke out on June 26, ending in a violent brawl and the arrest of at least nine Roma inhabitants. Many of those marching on Sunday also expressed their dismay over the government's reaction to the incident. The government, in turn, is calling for round-the-clock police presence in the area. «24 hour presence of uniformed policemen — that's what we demand,» said Valeri Simeonov, the deputy Prime Minister of Bulgaria, who also attended the march. «If it doesn't happen, we will come back to protest.»
