Brussels: EU opens legal action against Poland over Supreme Court changes

*JUMPCUT AT SOURCE* Spokesperson of the European Commission Margaritis Schinas announced the opening of an infringement procedure by the EU Commission against Poland. The procedure pertains to Warsaw's plans to introduce law changes that will bring forward the retirement of 27 out of 72 judges of the Polish Supreme Court. Еще Monday. «The Polish government will have one month to reply to the commission's letter of formal notice,» said Schinas, pointing out the Commission’s dissatisfaction with Poland’s «lack of progress and the imminent implementation of the new retirement regime» in the course of rule-of-law dialogue. The law which will be enforced on June 3 is set to lower the retirement age from 70 to 65 years old, forcing even First President of the Supreme Court Malgorzata Gersdorf into early retirement.
