Brazil: Venezuela suspended from Mercosur following democratic rupture

Paraguayan Foreign Minister and Mercosur leader Eladio Loizaga announced the «suspension of Venezuela's participation and membership» from the sub-regional bloc's organisation and called for the country to restore democracy, speaking at a press conference in Sao Paulo on Saturday. Argentine Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie, another Mercosur leader, said that «all the rights and duties of Venezuela... Еще» within the group are being halted as the country reached — what Brazilian Foreign Minister Aloysio Nunes called — «a democratic rupture.» According to Uruguay Foreign Minister Rodolfo Nin Novoa such measure would lead Venezuela on «the road to peace, democracy, freedom, respect for human rights, popular pressure.» During the last Mercosur summit in Mendoza, in July, Faurie stated that democracy in Venezuela was «not fully in force», although it is an «indispensable condition» for membership of the Mercosur. Venezuela was suspended from the international forum in December last year on account of its failure to comply with the forum's democratic principles.
