Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana beachgoers and locals commented on Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro's announcement that he had tested positive for coronavirus, Wednesday.
A supporter of Bolsonaro said that he «was doing a good job» but regarding the coronavirus, he «dropped the ball for not wearing a mask at this very difficult moment we are all going through. He took his chance, he took his chance and got infected.»
The 65-year-old president, who has on several occasions played down the coronavirus, told the press that he was already feeling better and later on Tuesday posted a video of himself on social media taking hydroxychloroquine, a drug of which he is a staunch defender, although its effectiveness in fighting coronavirus has not been proven.
«The president's infection could have been purposeful to show the population that this is just little flu, that doesn't cause many problems and to promote the so-called chloroquine,» said Rita Veloso, a Rio resident.
Brazil has registered more than 1,7 million coronavirus cases and almost 68,000 deaths with the virus as of Wednesday, according to Johns Hopkins University.
