Brazil: Protesters demand safety for health workers after nurse dies on COVID frontline

Protesters demonstrated outside the Sao Paulo Regional Nursing Council on Friday, demanding safety for nurses and healthcare workers treating COVID-19 patients. Several of the demonstrators were family members of Maria Duarte, a 63 year-old diabetic nurse who lost her life after developing coronavirus symptoms. Protesters wore shirts with an image of the deceased medical worker. «My mother was a public servant, my mother was a nurse. She worked in the Emergency Room 2, in Carapicuiba, and twice she asked for leave. She had health problems, and they didn't care about it,» said Marta Costa, a daughter of Duarte who participated in the protest. 33 nurses are believed to have died from the disease across the state of Sao Paulo. Brazil has been the second hardest-hit country in the world with more than 1.2 million registered cases of COVID-19 and nearly 55,000 deaths linked to the coronavirus.
