Former Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, known simply as Lula, derided the judicial system which convicted him of corruption and money laundering, at a rally with his supporters in Sao Paulo on Thursday. At a gathering of intellectuals and artists in Casa de Portugal, Lula's defence lawyer Cristiano Zanin Martins said the court ruling last July «obviously does not reflect reality of... Еще the facts». Next week, Lula will find out whether his nine-and-a-half year prison sentence will be overturned. If the conviction is upheld, Brazilian law states that Lula should be barred from running in this year's presidential election. The former president still enjoys wide support in his native Brazil and is leading the polls for October's vote.
