Hundreds of people marched through the streets of Sao Paolo, Wednesday, in support of former Brazilian President Luis Ignacio Lula da Silva. Representatives of trade unions and political parties took part in the rally, including the Unified Workers' Central (CUT), the Popular Brazil Front, the Labour Cause's Party (PCO) and the Workers' Party (PT). Lula supporters gathered at Praca da Se in... Еще central Sao Paulo before marching toward Praca da Republica. Last week, Lula turned himself in to police following a two-day standoff, which saw him taking refuge at the metalworkers' union headquarters in Sao Paulo in defiance of an arrest warrant. The Supreme Court of Brazil confirmed that 72-year-old Lula will serve a prison sentence directly after the rejection of his first appeal by a vote of 6:5. Lula was sentenced to a 12-year jail term for corruption and money laundering in a case known as Operation Car Wash. He was convicted of receiving bribes.
