Sao Paulo Police arrested a former police officer and old friend of Brazil’s president Jair Bolsonaro on Thursday, in connection with a corruption investigation involving the president’s son, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro.
Fabricio Queiroz was arrested at a house that reportedly belongs to a Bolsonaro family lawyer, Frederick Wassef, in Atibaia, a small town outside of Sao Paulo, where he hid for “about a year,» according to police.
A police car with Queiroz within could be seen arriving at the Civil Police Headquarters in Sao Paulo.
Queiroz is suspected to have played a key role in an alleged corruption racket ran by Flavio Bolsonaro during his 15-year tenure as a state legislator in Rio.
After being taken into preventive detention amid a lot of local media coverage in Sao Paulo, Queiroz was transferred to a prison in Rio de Janeiro.
The case is another blow to President Bolsonaro, whose popularity is already at record lows as Brazil struggles to deal with the coronavirus crisis.
