Brazil: At least 22 killed after ferry sinks near Salvador

At least 22 people died after a ferry sank off the north-eastern Brazilian city of Salvador de Bahia, Brazilian Navy reported on Thursday. According to police, 129 people were on board the vessel at the time of the incident, of which around 90 were rescued alive. The vessel capsized shortly after its departure from Salvador's port, reportedly after being hit by a powerful wave. «Accidents... Еще happen eventually, but of an accident of these proportions we have no records,» commented Frigate Captain of the 2nd Naval District of the Brazilian Navy Flavio Almeida. Almeida said that rescue teams are currently conducting searches in the area surrounding the shipwreck along with the help of private boats, and proceed in larger circles «to make sure that there are no more people in danger.»
