Bosnia and Herzegovina: 25th anniversary of Srebrenica massacre marked by COVID pandemic

Hundred of mourners gathered at the Srebrenica Genocide Memorial in Potocari on Saturday, to remember the victims of the 1995 Srebrenica massacre. The 25th anniversary of Srebrenica was marked with the presence of a relatively smaller number of people this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Under coronavirus restrictions, memorial services were held in two different areas. The remains of nine newly identified victims of the 1995 Srebrenica massacre were buried during this year's ceremony. Over 8,000 Bosniak men and boys were murdered and thousands of women and girls were sexually assaulted and tortured when units of the Bosnian Serb Army of Republika Srpska overran the UN 'safe area' of Srebrenica in July 1995.
