Belgium: UN envoy warns of Syria’s new looming humanitarian crisis

UN Special Envoy Steffan de Mistura warned of the next possible humanitarian crisis in Syria at a joint press conference in Brussels with EU High Representative Federica Mogherini on Tuesday. De Mistura said: «Our concern [is] on the humanitarian side: Idlib. Because Idlib is the big new challenge. 2.5 million people. And you will not believe that all of them are terrorists, of course. There are... Еще women, children, civilians. And this is looming up there. So we hope that this will be an occasion for making sure that Idlib doesn't become the new Aleppo, the new Eastern Ghouta, but the dimensions are completely different.» He was speaking with EU High Representative Federica Mogherini during a two days conference on Syria co-organised by the EU and the UN where they spoke with civil society groups from the region. Mogherini said: «The main message that [...] we brought to them [the Syrians] and we underlined to them why is so important that they are here with us is that Syria is not a chessboard, is not a geopolitical game. Syria belongs to the Syrian people and the Syrian people have to decide themselves about the future of their country.»
