Belgium: 'Too early to talk about success' — Tusk on migration deal

European Council President Donald Tusk stated that «it is far too early to talk about the success» of the reached migration deal, at a press conference in Brussels on Friday. Tusk stressed that reaching the accord «is in fact the easiest part of the task compared to what awaits us on the ground when we start implementing it.» According to Tusk, EU leaders accepted three proposals, including... Еще the creation of «disembarkation platforms outside Europe, dedicated budgetary tool in the next [Multi Annual Financial Framework] MMF to combat illegal migration as well as boosting EU support for the Libyan coast guard.» The European Council president noted that the accord also includes «the Franco-Italian proposal of control centres on EU territory in countries that are willing to build them,» while ensuring that «all the measures in the context of these centres» will be carried out on a «voluntary basis.» Tusk went on to say that EU leaders also agreed to launch the «next tranche of financing for Turkey and to transfer 500 million euros [$580 million] of development money to the EU trust fund for Africa.» European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, who spoke at the press conference alongside Tusk, confirmed that he would travel to Washington D.C. to discuss trade issues between the US and the EU «before the end of July.» He said, «I am not sure that we will find an agreement between US and the European Union, but we'll try.» Leaders of the 28 European Union member states have been meeting in Brussels for a European Council summit between June 28 and 29. The summit has been focused on migration as well as economic and financial reforms.
